Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak – Engine & Design
Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak, the performance car used by Sébastien Loeb to compete in the famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competition, has a 3.2-liter 24-valve twin-turbo V6 engine, center mounted, that develops 875 horsepower and 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque.
The 6-speed sequential transmission, the ceramic carbon brakes and aerodynamics have been “borrowed” from the Peugeot 908 Le Mans Series sports prototype racing car. Since the bodywork is made entirely of carbon fiber, the car weighs 875 kilograms (1,930 lbs), the power/weight ratio being 1:1.
“Imagination is the only limit when you realize a car design for Pikes Peak. We reduced the weight of the car to 875 kilograms, and as a result we got the magical and symbolic 1:1 ratio between power and weight, one horsepower for every kilogram” said Jean-Christophe Pallier, Peugeot Sport engineer.
Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak is able to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 1.8 seconds, top speed of 240 km/h (150 mph) is reached in seven seconds.
“I want to thank the people at Citroën for the opportunity to lend us this exceptional champion. Our objective is to win, so we need to turn as many winning cards in our favor by joining forces with the best partners for this project: Total, Red Bull, Michelin and Loeb. Pikes Peak is a legendary race that inspired all brands. It is a difficult challenge that leaves no room for error,” said Maxime Picat, Peugeot general manager.
The racing car will be tested this week by the endurance driver Greg Guilvert before Loeb will compete in the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competition. Sebastien Loeb admits that the fans expect him to win the race at Pikes Peak, but the Frenchman is cautious regarding the racing event from the end of June.
“I know everyone expects me to be great in the race. People expect me to shine at Pikes Peak, and my goal is always victory. However, it is a difficult race whose preparation is special. In Colorado we do not meet conditions find anywhere. Similar to the Le Mans endurance race, it is difficult to do simulations,” said Sébastien Loeb.
“My career has been marked by many challenges and new challenges motivates me. Pikes Peak is a combination, but primarily it is a sportive challenging and it is nice to be involved in such a project. I admit that I had this race in a corner of my mind for some time, it was on the list of exotic things that I wanted to do,” added Loeb.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competition takes place on tarmac on a route length of 20 kilometers (12.42 miles) at altitudes between 1,440 meters (4,720 ft) from the start line to 4,300 meters (14,110 ft) at the finish, counting 156 turns and a 7% average grades.
