The 2012 Volvo V40 was “baptized” by the press a lot of times as V30 after some spy photos have hit the internet. Some considered this normal as this compact car was seen as the five-door brother of C30. Still, Swedish car’s final name was nothing less than V40.
Launched in the same room where Audi unveiled the new 2012 A3 and Mercedes amazed us with the new 2012 A-Class, Volvo has the advantage of being seen as a challenger in this equation, and an eventual market success would bring an important image advantage for Volvo.
The engines from the 2012 Volvo V40 are very interesting as well. We are talking about five petrol engines ranging from 150 hp (T3 1.6 liter) to a very intriguing T5 2.5 liter turbocharged version with 254 horsepower, mated to either a six-speed automatic or manual gearbox, that will run to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.7-second.
The diesel fans will be pleased by three engines that go from 115 hp to 177 hp. This last unit promises 8.3 seconds for 0-100 km/h (62 mph) and a fuel consumption of just 4.5 litres/100km (62.8 mpg imperial, 52.3 mpg US).
The Swedes boasts with the equipment level on the 2012 Volvo V40: a variety of security systems – like the innovative pedestrian detection system, a fully automatic braking system that operates at speeds up to 50 km/h, but also that this is the first car that mounted airbags for pedestrians.
Production of the 2012 Volvo V40 will begin from May at the Volvo plant in Ghent, Belgium, the Swedes aiming to sell 90,000 models/year, 85% will be sold on the European market.
