Which Vauxhall is the Best of All Time?

Finding the best Vauxhall doesn’t mean finding the most popular. Popular cars are compromises, built to fill the needs of the largest segment of the car buying public. Tap water does the same thing and that doesn’t make it the best drink available. Frankly, the best Vauxhall ever made has to bring very-high performance to the party and do it in a way that’s reliable.

Imagine a car that rivals German supercars, one that goes fast like the BMW M5 and has a power equal to the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. Now imagine a car like that for £20,000 cheaper than its supercar rivals. Imagine again that the engine and drivetrain come from proven vehicles that commonly last for well over 150,000 miles.

Vauxhall VXR8 GTS Specs

The Vauxhall VXR8 GTS fills the requirements. It’s superfast, super quick, impressively engineered and reliable. The heart of the VXR8 GTS is the engine. Vauxhall made a practical decision. They used the 6.2 litre LSA engine from General Motors (Vauxhall is owned by GM). The LSA has been in use since 2009 and powers the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

GM has installed the parent-line LS engines in all the Corvettes since 1997. Because of its small size and high-output, the LS is a favourite of hot rods and light aircraft. This means it’s been tested, changed, corrected and re-tested and will run forever.

The LSA in the Vauxhall GTS carries an Eaton supercharger with 4 lobe rotors and a 9psi boost for better performance across the power band of the engine. The engine features a water to air intercooler for the fuel/air mixture, water to oil cooler for the engine and a high flow exhaust system. All of this technology pulls together to deliver 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft. of torque.

Performance figures aren’t out for the 2014 VXR8 GTS but last year’s model went from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds with 150 fewer horses. The power goes to the rear wheels through a six speed manual or six speed automatic transmissions.

The engine needs 75% more air flowing through the cooling systems than last year’s model. The body has giant ducts open below the headlights. The big openings give the front of the car an aggressive feel.

The body slants from back to front suggesting that the car is going fast enough to be pulled over when it’s sitting in the driveway. The back-end is a bit cluttered with too many openings, bulges, indents, lights, wings and tailpipes, but that honestly doesn’t matter.
