Irv Gordon seems to really love his car, the Volvo P1800. Aged 72 this American is close to completing a new record, as only 34,000 miles separate him from reaching a total of three million miles (over 4.8 million km) with his car, a Volvo P1800 S. This guy bought his car back in 1966 and after 20 years of driving reached the first million-mile journey, and the next million took another 15 years. Now, he’s very close to reach 3 million miles with the same car!
Irv Gordon of East Patchogue, New York, USA bought in June 1966 his first car, a Volvo P1800 S and paid the amount of 4,150 dollars. Then he was 25, now he’s over 70, but the car still works and he driven it for almost 3 million miles which means more than a hundred times the length of the Equator.
Irv Gordon claims most of the parts are original, including the engine, and adds that he traveled in all U.S. states reaching more than 100,000 miles (160,000 km) / year. Gordon first entered the Guinness Book in 1998 when, with 1.69 million miles traveled was the first driver to reach this number in a non-commercial vehicle. He reached two million miles in 2002, and the three million could be achieved by the end of 2013.
2013: Irv Gordon’s Volvo P1800 Update
It had covered in excess of 2,219,751 miles (3,572,343 km) by March 2004, and passed the 2,600,000-mile (4,200,000 km) mark by October 2007. As of August 2009, the car is at 2.7 million miles and the owner is now targeting the three million mile mark. As of summer 2011, the car had reached a little over 2.9 million miles. As of July 2012, the car is 34,000 miles shy of the 3 million mile mark; that milestone is expected to be reached in early 2013.
He has driven about 26,000 of those miles outside of the U.S., in Canada and Mexico, as well as in Europe. “In Sweden, we drove to Volvo’s global headquarters to see where the P1800 was born”, Gordon said.

Volvo obviously has not missed the opportunity to use his P1800S for marketing purposes making Gordon even more famous by sending his car to represent the Swedish brand at various auto shows
On April 2, 2002, Gordon and his 1800S were guests on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, after reaching the two million milestone. As of July 2010, Gordon reached 2.8 million miles for his 70th birthday, and announced that he hopes to reach 3 million by the time he turns 73. That feat will require him to drive an average of around 5,500 miles per month.
Irv Gordon and his Volvo were featured on PBS’s Nova scienceNow in January 2011 and in Hemmings Sports & Exotic Magazine in November 2011.
