Dacia Sandero Stepway Review [complete] – Handsome

Dacia Sandero Stepway 1.5 dCi 90 HP Review. Dacia is a fashionable brand in Europe nowadays. The automobile manufacturer produces the exact models that would  attract customers who know that their budget for buying a car is not very high. However, even if it produces budget cars, Dacia was able to launch a range of quality models that provide enough satisfaction to the potential customers. And for those who want more than just a practical car, Dacia has found the recipe for success.

Dacia Sandero Stepway 1.5 dCi 90 HP

Dacia Sandero Stepway is now on its second generation and it’s cooler than ever. It looks better, it works great, but – more importantly – has an unbeatable price. The target customers are passionate about lifestyle, they want an extraordinary car, personalized through visual elements and a higher ground clearance.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Engine / Transmission 4/5

Dacia has decided not to offer too many alternatives when it comes to choosing the new Sandero Stepway motorization. Thus, the customers can choose between a gasoline engine, the already famous turbo 0.9 TCe of 90 HP, or a turbodiesel from Renault’s range. The last one was the heart of the model that we’ve tested. We talk about an 1.5 dCi of 90 HP, an engine extremely popular among the models made by Dacia Renault Nissan group, a model that almost needs no introduction. It provides 90 hp at 3,750 rpm and 220 Nm (162.24 lb/ft) at 1,750 rpm. The power is transmitted to the front wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

The engine offers excellent innings at any stage, very pleasant on long journeys. The torque is available at low revs and this makes any overtaking maneuver to be made without too much effort. The five-speed transmission has a relatively short natural setting, and sometimes the lever clings when shifting, but does that without being annoying.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Fuel efficiency 4/5

The 1.5-liter turbodiesel engine of 90 hp used by Sandero Stepway is one of the most economical engines in its segment. The official figures state that Dacia Sandero Stepway 1.5 dCi will have a mixed fuel efficiency of 4 liters/100 km (58.81 US mpg / 70.62 Imp. mpg). An optimistic figure, that can be achieved if you select the Eco mode and adopt an economical and preventive driving style. The Eco mode can be activated by pressing the button located on the left wheel and when it is activated, the engine responds slower and the throttle response is anesthetized.

In real life and without the Eco mode being activated, we managed a mixed fuel efficiency of 5.1 liters/100 km (46 US mpg / 55.38 Imp. mpg). An efficiency more than decent. Dacia Sandero Stepway has some rivals in the small class: Suzuki SX4, Fiat Sedici, Opel Mokka. We could also compare it with any model located in the B segment. There are economic models in this class and Chevrolet Aveo 1.3 D or Citroen C3 e-HDI are only two examples reporting a mixed fuel efficiency of 3.6 or 3.7 l/100 km(64 US mpg/77 Imp. mpg).

Dacia Sandero Stepway Performance 3.5/5

Dacia Sandero Stepway hasn’t proposed to beat records in terms of performance. But that doesn’t mean that we are dealing with a very slow snail. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is done in 11.8 seconds and the top speed that can be achieved is 167 km/h (103.7 mph). Obviously, there are segment B models which can provide better performance, but Dacia Sandero Stepway is not designed for those who want a fast car. The Sandero Stepway client is more interested in price, fuel efficiency and design.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Interior 4/5

The Dacia Sandero Stepway interior is more than a pleasant surprise. For a car with an affordable price, the quality of used materials is above expectations. In addition, Dacia has used design elements such as embroidery of Stepway name on the back of the seats to brighten up the interior. The upholstery is one of the few elements different from a standard Sandero. Optionally you can order a leather upholstery.

The dashboard and the clocks on it remain the same, simple, clean and without too many gewgaws. As the Sandero, we have a touch screen that groups the navigation system, the audio system and the phone interface connected via Bluetooth. The trunk is big enough with 320 liters (11.3 cu-ft) available and now Sandero Stepway offers a split folding seat for more flexibility in loading oversized items.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Purchase price 5/5

The Sandero Stepway starting price is 10,800 Euros for the petrol version. Sandero Stepway with the turbodiesel engine that we’ve tested costs 12,200 Euros (VAT included). It is an interesting price for a car with a  list of standard equipment that Dacia offers for this special series. The list of features covers four airbags, ESP, navigation system, Bluetooth capabilities and cruise control.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Safety 3/5

Dacia hasn’t shone so far in the EuroNCAP crash tests organized. None of the Dacia models tested by EuroNCAP has received more than three stars. The old Sandero was tested in 2008, resulting in an overall score of three stars and four stars for child protection. But the new Sandero Stepway has a totally new platform that still hasn’t been EuroNCAP tested and the group is confident that the new Renault Dacia Sandero will get four stars in the future crash tests.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Roadholding 3.5/5

The roadholding is one of the surprises of the new Sandero. The suspension is far superior to that used by the previous generation. It is well adjusted and allows excellent road holding for cornered roads. And it manages to provide a quality comfort for the people in the cabin. The strangest part about the Sandero Stepway version is that the suspension has been lifted by 20 mm, which affects the roadholding. Stepway wins in terms of ground clearance, which allows trips on bumped roads or climbing borders without emotion. Personally, I wasn’t impressed by the steering mechanism of the car, the feeling of driving is quite artificial and the assistance is too soft.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Visibility 4/5

The visibility is not a problem aboard a Sandero Stepway. The glass surface is generous enough in any direction, and the fact that the car is slightly higher than a normal car helps on this chapter. As a simple car, Dacia has chosen not to equip the car with parking sensors.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Technology 4/5

As we said above, it doesn’t mean that if Dacia produces affordable cars that will be spartan and lacking amenities. The new Sandero Stepway comes with a new series of items that couldn’t be found on the previous generation and leaves behind even important models in the segment. Obviously, all the systems are common with the normal Sandero.

La piece de resistance is the touch screen info system. It is extremely easy to use. Through it you can quickly access the navigation system which has maps for all the Europe as an option costing 100 euros. Also through the display you can quickly get to the audio system and the phone interface connected via Bluetooth. But the new system has no CD player and the music can be heard by connecting a USB stick. The new Dacia Sandero Stepway now has a cruise control system borrowed from Renault and the steering wheel is also identical. It should be mentioned that the  manual air conditioning and the 40/60 folding seats, represent a first for Dacia Sandero Stepway.

Dacia Sandero Stepway Design 4.5/5

The new Sandero Stepway looks great, much better than the previous generation. The new Sandero Stepway can be ordered only in four colors, but the Bleu d’Azur is by far the most successful. Stepway can also be recognized by its different bumpers, side sills and the roof racks. Plus a generous Stepway inscription on the front doors. An interesting feature is the wheels. Although they seem alloy, they are actually tin and they have plastic caps. A low-cost solution specifically to Dacia, but very successful.
