What are the cheapest cars to insure?

With insurance prices set to rise for women as of the 21st December thanks to a ruling by the European Court of Justice, it’s more important than ever to shop around for cheaper car insurance. Make sure you check how the ruling has affected your premiums before you renew. You should always check as many sites as you can for prices (try getting quotes for cheap car insurance from 123.ie if you’re an Irish citizen, for example).

Car Insurance

Although insurers can’t charge you a different amount based on gender, there are factors that affect how much you pay for cover – the biggest one is the kind of car you want to insure. Some cars are much cheaper to insure than others; if you’re looking for a used car, you might want to consider one of these:

1. Toyota Aygo

The Aygo has been around for a few years now, and as it can near 63MPG there are plenty of other ways it can save you money. It’s also got a “great engine, cute looks and very low running costs”, according to WhatCar?

2. Toyota Yaris

The second Toyota on our list; the Yaris is a “handy and versatile little thing” according to the presenters of BBC show Top Gear, which just goes to show that cheap insurance isn’t the only thing on offer for these cars. Both Toyota’s fall into insurance category 2, and are widely considered to be amongst the most reliable makes of car around.

3. Nissan Pixo

The Nissan Pixo is extremely economical too – 64.2MPG is a pretty impressive figure. It’s another insurance group 2, and Autocar hail it as one of the best routes to “no frills motoring” available right now.

4. Smart Fortwo

Smart cars have been pretty sought after for a while – they’re cute, extremely economical, and as it turns out really cheap to insure too. Maybe that’s because it can fit through gaps that other cars simply can’t.
