Diesel versus hybrid. Which is more efficient?

May 9, 2011

Brits from Which? Car conducted a series of comparative tests between different hybrid and diesel models to see which ones are more economical in real traffic conditions. Journalists at Which? Car conducted a test comparing hybrid cars and the one using a diesel engine to see which is more efficient in actual conditions. Hybrid models, are tested by manufacturers under ideal conditions, which don’t reflect the reality that we encounter on the road. First, journalists have opted for a consumption test between a BMW 320d with EfficientDynamics system and between a Toyota Prius. According to producers, the Japanese hybrid consumes 3,25 liters per 100 kilometers, and the BMW 3 Series make the same distance with 3,4 liters of diesel. After testing, those from Which? Car obtained a 3,83 liter consumption for Prius and 3,66 liter for BMW 320d. “BMW has a reputation as a manufacturer that produces aggressive and sportivecars , but 320d Efficient Dynamics represents an important statement in terms of fuel saving technology. Another test was done by the British between Skoda Octavia Greenline II and Honda Insight. According to the numbers obtained by them, the Czech manufacturer’s model is slightly more economical than the Japanese hybrid. The third comparison was made by the British between an Opel Astra with 1.3 liter diesel engine and a Toyota Auris HSD. The winner of this test proved to be the Japanese hybrid. “In most cases you will save money with a hybrid car. Fuel costs are lower, lower CO2 emissions and the owners do not pay taxes. Incoming...

Test Drive: Porsche Cayenne SUVereign

May 17, 2010

Porsche strikes again. The model created a decade ago for the Stuttgart brand and become the backbone of Porsche sales – Cayenne. Well, that goes back, Porsche is making a comeback in 2010 by a new generation. One that really fails to live up to the mark. The SUV market dynamic attack the top end of competition by engines in November, including a hybrid version of the already known diesel engine. Over all though, Porsche Cayenne comes with a new design, with the strongest indoor market with an unrivaled dynamic behavior of machines over two tons. We have tested in Greece the most powerful one, the Cayenne Turbo 500 hp version, and I felt things not thought possible in an SUV. Engine / Transmission When you say Porsche Cayenne Turbo you say 500 bhp engine. Whether you refer to old or new generation. However, the differences are huge between the two generations. Reason: new eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission developed by ZF that seems perfectly tailored for this engine. Talk of a 4.8-liter V8 that ranks second from the bottom up in terms of displacement (only BMW’s 4.4-liter V8 or fall below). Maximum power of 500 horses is reached at 6,000 rpm and 55 hp is lowered than the X5 and X6 M version with 10 hp less than that of M63 AMG and Range Rover Sport, but with more than 115 hp that of the Infiniti FX50S. But Porsche has put stress on the engine’s huge torque (700 Nm), the largest in the segment. Eight-speed box makes all the difference. Especially developed to remove the maximum performance and minimum consumption, ZF transmission in our test showed that...

Test Drive: Volkswagen Touareg – King Attack

Test Drive: Volkswagen Touareg – King Attack

May 16, 2010

Year of grace 2002. Volkswagen launched a model that was expected throughout the car industry: the Touareg. German’s first SUV in the market managed to force a good time, managed to impose little trouble in a segment that was at that time only one who truly was born. Since then eight years have passed, and the Touareg is the market with fresh forces. The second generation Volkswagen SUV has kept the basic attributes of its ancestor, but everything that could be borrowed from the Porsche Cayenne and brother out on the market in a new form and with a different image. Our impression is that the Touareg has matured very quickly, differences from previous generation is more than obvious. And more, the Touareg has been transformed from an “SUV of the people” in a car that has no problem to soar into a war with enemies that were considered far more superior. And this is reflected implicitly in the endnote, one that until two days ago it seems impossible. But there are surprises. X5 and ML, are you tuned? Engine / Transmission We have tested the entry-level version of the Touareg range, a 3.0-liter V6 TDI that develops 240 hp and torque that made us happy in the two days we had contact with the German model: 550 Nm. Great appearance with eight steps, however transmission is coupled to the engine, it really proved to be suitable for power resources of the SUV from Wolfsburg. Torque is available from 2000 rpm and maximum power is delivered at 4,000 rpm. As above telling you, the new eight-speed transmission with Tiptronic is the real novelty in this chapter, both...

Test Drive: BMW 5 Series

May 12, 2010

The old BMW 5 Series range is seen as outcast, a rebellious teenager, like Bangle’s expression of non-conformism. It is pure expression of desire to do something different, tragically hit by harsh criticism, but able to answer all the crazy financial success. New generation, sixth in total, it was good. Preserves tradition, walks timidly in the footsteps of Series 7, exploits the limits of decent sense of aggression and tempers design excesses. Weighed, E60 and F10 are two contradictory cars, which abound in an abstract Picasso first car designer (Chris Bangle) and too wise to risk a new wave of criticism. Love the madness or conservatism? Depends only on the spirit of each 5 Series client, present or future. We thank the management of Munich but has not abandoned the idea that a dynamic sedan, ready to snatch you a discreet smile or a healthy guffaw when “posterior” awakes. Engine / Transmission I have lived the words “Joy is BMW“ at the wheel of a diesel version -  530d, or in other words, the perfect balance between power and fuel economy. Review with six-cylinder engine” linear” stirred memories and reconfirmed Aryan racial supremacy, Munich’s area in the field of high performance diesel engines. propeller with six-cylinder 3.0-liter capacity and has provided his tireless troop of 245 horse power, always aided by a couple Motor impressive: 540 Nm. If we consider the sedan full of energy since the 1750 rotations, and all horsepower are at full capacity when tachometer needle climbs to 4000 rpm, we conclude that the...

Test Drive: Alfa Romeo Giulietta – Revival

Test Drive: Alfa Romeo Giulietta – Revival

May 6, 2010

Test Drive: Alfa Romeo Giulietta To the Italians is simple: when you know you have a knife to the bone and need an excellent car that make them to rebound, they are more likely to produce a really interesting pattern. Is the case of Alfa Romeo Giulietta, who drew strength from the history of Alfa Romeo‘s sporty appeal that 147 compact segment has excelled, but which has already withdrawn some time. After all, why Giulietta need to succeed in a market segment more populous than ever? For comfort, superior dynamics, strong engine and a decent price. Well, mostly Italians managed to tick all these requirements. And develop a model which, besides looking good, dynamic capabilities are envied. I admit: I started the Alfa Romeo Giulietta test drive with the impression that it’s just a little more dynamic version of the Fiat Bravo. But it got some serious gineers who developed a completely different car in terms of behavior. And the change is evidently in good. Engine / Transmission For the test in Italy we had two engines, both gasoline: 1.4 Multiair 170 HP and the new 1750 TBI 235 HP, top of the range of the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta and best segment to report engine torque/litres. For diesel lovers, Alfa Romeo will have to start a new career market model and two diesel units, a 1.6 105 hp and a 2.0 Multijet of 170 hp. For more details about the 170 hp version, we expect an internal test at the launch in July. TBI engine (Gasoline Turbo Direct Injection) 1750 cc was presented to us before the test as a top engineering achievement. And what did the Italians: the...
