One of the most anticipated new releases from the Swedish, the new 2014 Volvo XC90 will be available in two years, with new engines developed by Volvo, the main novelty being the construction of the new model on a platform that will debut together with the Scandinavian SUV.
The platform is officially called SPA (Scaleable Platform Architecture), it is modular and will accommodate production of all Volvo models from mid-upper segment starting with the new generations.
On the modified SPA platform we will see the future S60, V70, XC60 and S80, all benefiting from the contribution of a modern and technologically advanced production base.
According to the British journalists, the new 2014 Volvo XC90 will be available in both petrol and diesel versions, as well as a plug-in hybrid variant, the latter following to be developed in collaboration with Siemens.
On the other hand, Volvo is considering developing a compact SUV that will be positioned in range bellow the XC60 model. Development of this model will only be achieved if Scandinavians will find a new partner with whom to develop the new platform, as the newly launched V40 is developed on a platform provided by the former Volvo partners from Ford, the compact model being the last one to have a strong connection with the American automaker.
