2013 Mercedes GL Specs
The big brother of 2012 Mercedes ML comes with a fresh design and new dimensions. Length increased from 200.7 inches (5099 mm) to 201.6 inches (5120 mm), width decreased from 85.4 inches (2170 mm) to 94.3 inches (2141 mm), but the wheelbase remains the same, that is 121 inches (3075 mm).
The chassis is derived from the current ML, but modified and reinforced to support a larger and heavier bodywork. Even so, the total mass is reduced by 220 lbs (100 kg), through the use of aluminum and fiber.
Inside, the 2013 Mercedes GL keeps the seven-seat configuration and raises the cabin top by 0.5 inches (10 mm). Speaking of the premium segment, Mercedes offers an electric seat folding, when the driver wants to use the entire loading surface: 94 ft³ (2660 liters). Under normal conditions, when all 7 seats are used, the cargo capacity is 16 ft³ (450 liters).
The exterior of 2013 Mercedes GL borrows the design lines of the smaller brother – 2012 ML. The profile is dominated by two strong ribs and the front comes with a prominent grille with two chrome lines and LED optical blocks and wider bosses. The wheels range in size from 19 to 21 inches.
For those who choose the AMG kit, Mercedes offers, in addition to the accessories aesthetic, 19-inch perforated brake discs, hidden behind the 21-inch AMG wheels.
The new GL comes with a generous technology package, including systems like: DISTRONIC PLUS and PRESAFE brake with autonomous braking function to optimize safety in certain dangerous situations. The package also comes with Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Collision Prevention Assist and Off-Road Package. The latter includes AIRMATIC air suspension that allows elevation of the ground clearance by 11 inches (28 cm), lockable differential, a revised transmission and a number of protection panels. This includes the Active Curve System, which uses adaptive suspension to soften the body roll.
2013 Mercedes GL Engines
With the launch of 2013 Mercedes GL Class, the Germans introduce a new range of engines, which is opened by the 350 BlueTec version of 258 hp (192.4 kW/ 261.6 PS) and 630 Nm (465 lb/ft). The unit allows a sprint from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
The engine list is completed by a V8 twin-turbo of 408 hp (304.3 kW/413.7 PS) from the Mercedes GL500 BlueEFFICIENCY. The 408 horsepower engine ensures a torque of 600 Nm (443 lb/ft) available between 1600 and 4750 revs. Resources are sufficient to push the SUV from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in just 5.9 seconds, to a limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
Both units will be assisted by a 7G-Tronic automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD). In Europe, Mercedes will complete the engine list with a number of diesel units, whose presence will be announced in the future.
