Ferrari 458 Speciale is the Italians surprise the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA – Sep 14-22, 2013). Rumors announcing the debut of a performance version of the supercar from Maranello talked about names like Monte Carlo, Challenge Stradale or Scuderia, but Ferrari decided to use a new name.
Ferrari 458 Speciale – Engine & Design
In case you’re wondering what’s so special with the Ferrari 458 Speciale, know that the new model comes with a 4.5-liter V8 engine that delivers 605 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque(398 lb-ft), that can climb up to 9,000 rpm. The engine is aspirated with the greatest liter power in the world of all the series engines ever offered by a car manufacturer.
In addition to being more powerful than a standard Ferrari 458 Italia, the special model is 90 kilograms (198 lbs) lighter, totaling 1,290 kilograms (2,844 lbs), with a weight/power ratio of only 2.13. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is carried out in only three seconds, while acceleration from 0 to 200 km/h (125 mph) is achieved in 9.1 seconds. The Italians say that Ferrari 458 Speciale is 1.5 seconds faster than the 458 Italia on their test circuit – Fiorano 1.23.5 lap time (just half a second slower than the F12 Berlinetta but 1.5 seconds faster than the 458 Italia).
Ferrari 458 Speciale is equipped with a set of Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires developed specifically for the new version, which ensures excellent performance on both dry and wet asphalt.
The Ferrari Styling Center in collaboration with Pininfarina, modified front and rear active aero of 458 Speciale in order to find the best balance between downforce and resistance. Thanks to this, the Ferrari 458 Speciale is the most aerodynamically efficient Ferrari in the history of the company, with an E index of 1.5.
The performance model has a number of aerodynamic improvements, including and electronically controlled flaps. Thrust is raised to new heights thanks to the Side Slip Angle Control, which analyzes the vehicle sideslip angle and compares it with a target factory default, and then distributes torque between the wheels to achieve the desired value.
Maranello, 20th August 2013 – The 458 Speciale is the latest product of Ferrari’s core philosophy of extreme technological innovation and research which, in this instance, has yielded powertrain, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics advances that transform the already exceptional 458 Italia into a car genuinely worthy of the “Speciale” moniker. The result is a completely new, uncompromising, streamlined sports car concept.
Many of the sophisticated solutions being applied for the very first time to an in-range car in the Ferrari 458 Speciale, including its advanced active aerodynamics, will become a standard feature of all new Ferraris in the future.
Flanked in the Maranello marque’s range by the multi-award-winning 458 Italia and 458 Spider, the new mid-rear-engined V8 berlinetta was designed to boost both performance and driving emotion to unprecedented levels, yet simultaneously guarantee smooth, effortless control in all kinds of situations.
