Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Car. A pretty long name for the fastest convertible in the world, capable of reaching 408 km/h (253 mph).
The Volkswagen Group subsidiary returns to the media attention with a new world record, after several publications announced that Bugatti lost the title for the fastest car in the world in favor of Hennessey and theirs Venom GT, which by the way is NOT a production car, but merely a heavily tuned Lotus Elise. Hennesey needs to build 50 identical copies to become a production car. Not likely to happen; but it’s still an impressive machine no matter how we label it.
Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse – The World Record Car limited edition
According to an official press release, Bugatti is, officially, the car manufacturer with fastest convertible in the world. Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse managed to reach a top speed of 408.84 km/h (254.04 mph) on the Ehra-Lessien circuit in Germany, where Volkswagen is testing almost all of its new models.
The record set by Anthony Liu, the Chinese racing pilot who was at the wheel of the supercar, has been confirmed by the German TÜV and certified Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse as the fastest convertible car in the world.
The copy which managed the performance is a series Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, painted in orange and black, the same colors as for the Super Sports coupe, the hypercar responsible for the old world speed record of a production car. Under the bonnet lies a 8.0-liter W16 engine capable of delivering 1200 horsepower and 1106 pound-feet of torque (1500 Nm) supplied between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm.
To mark the performance of its convertible, Bugatti brings at the Shanghai Motor Show (2013 April 21-29), scheduled to begin next week, a single copy of the limited edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, named World Record Car. The special edition will be limited to eight vehicles, and have the astronomical price of EUR 1.99 million ($ 2.6 million / £ 1.7 million).
Wolfsburg/Molsheim, 11 April 2013 – The world’s fastest roadster is a Bugatti. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse has set the world speed record for open-top production sports cars at the Volkswagen Group’s proving grounds in Ehra-Lessien.
“When we introduced the Vitesse, we established the top speed for open-top driving to be 375 km/h. Still, we could not let go of the idea of reaching the 400 km/h mark with this car as well. The fact that we have succeeded in reaching 408.84 km/h is a thrill for me, and it reaffirms once again that Bugatti is the leader when it comes to technology in the international automotive industry”, said Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.
The Vitesse was driven by the Chinese entrepreneur and passionate race driver Anthony Liu. After achieving the world record in the Vitesse, the 29-year old described his experience: “This was a very exciting moment. In our training sessions we exceeded 400 km/h but the fact that I could surpass this unbelievable speed once again and even higher has made me very proud. The car is even at such high speeds incredibly comfortable and stable. With an open top, you can really experience the sound of the engine and yet even at higher speeds I did not get compromised by the wind at all.”
