2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black Series – Engine & Design & Price
Under the bonnet we find an AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine, which now revs to 8,000 RPM (7,200 rpm for the “normal” SLS AMG) and delivers 631 horsepower (464 kW) and 468 pound-feet of torque (635 Nm). The V8 engine is matted with an AMG Speedshift DCT 7-speed sports transmission.
It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 3.6 seconds with a top speed of 196 mph (315 km/h). The mixed fuel efficiency is 13.7 l/100 km (17.17 MPG US / 20.62 MPG Imp.) and 321 g/km CO2 emissions.
In order to achieve this performance, 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black Series was updated with a revised air intake, adapted cam geometry, modified camshafts, improved water and oil cooling system and increased pressure in the injection rail.
In terms of design, 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black Series borrows several elements from the SLS AMG GT3 45h Anniversary edition. Wears a new bodywork with a grown front track width by 20 mm (0.8 in) and the rear by 24 mm (0.94 in). It has carbon ceramic brakes and 19-inch lightweight forged alloy wheels on the front and 20-inch on the rear, equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires – 275/35 front and 325/30 rear.
The new bodykit consists of: new front bumper, carbon splitter, side spoiler, vented hood, inflated fenders, new rear bumper, carbon spoiler and diffuser. The titanium exhaust weighs just 17 kg (37.5 lbs), 13 (28.6 lbs) less than SLS AMG GT and features four tailpipes. Overall the car weighs 1,550 kilograms (3,417 lbs), 70 (154.3 lbs) less than the SLS AMG GT.
The extra equipment is completed by the carbon aerodynamic package consisting of carbon adjustable spoiler, dive planes on the front bumper for better aerodynamics, improving stability for many miles. It also features an electronically controlled limited-slip differential with carbon shaft. The package included the launch control system and the active sport suspension.
Inside the 2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black Series we find a center console now made of carbon fiber and Alcantara, red stitching on the seats (also made from carbon fiber), weighing 15 kilograms (33 lbs) less. The steering wheel is coated with Alcantara and if you are looking for the COMAND infotainment system, will tell you that it was sacrificed in order to reduce additional 6 kg (13.2 lbs). It also lost 8 kg (17.6 lbs) by replacing the standard battery with a lithium-ion.
“The new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is a perfect study in the one hundred percent transfer of technology and engineering from motorsport to the road. We have drawn inspiration from the example set by the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car, which has enjoyed tremendous success worldwide. Boasting numerous lightweight components and sensational driving dynamics, our fifth Black Series model promises pure, unadulterated ‘Driving Performance’. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the ultimate choice for extremely quick lap times and highly emotional driving experiences,” says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
“The most dynamic road-going gullwing model of all time goes by the name of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series. Fans of high-performance super sports cars will be thrilled by its high-tech package. Its stirring performance and supreme driving dynamics are underpinned by the numerous new developments that have been incorporated into the engine, power transmission, suspension and aerodynamics, but also by us giving top priority to our “AMG Lightweight Performance” strategy. Great efforts in the area of lightweight design have resulted in a DIN kerb weight of 1550 kilograms”, notes Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and member of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
