The Japanese automaker unveiled today a version close to production of the new generation Honda Civic Type R, the model that will have to steal customers from the standard represented by Renault Megane RS.

The new Japanese hot-hatch dropped the camouflage and reveals a matte black painted bodywork. Of course there is an aerodynamic kit applied over the classic shapes, the sport package is designed to improve engine cooling, brakes and to provide more downforce.

The front bumper received generous air intakes, wheel arches became more flared, the tailgate received a large aileron and the posterior is dominated by a deflector flanked on both sides by twin exhaust pipes.

The absolute novelty lies however under the bonnet, where Honda Civic Type R received the first VTEC Turbo engine from Honda, with a 2.0 liter capacity. The Turbo unit will be the first of the three engines released today by Honda, that reaches Europe. Honda fans will be pleased to learn that the four-cylinder unit can provide a total power of 280 ponies. Something more than the Renault Megane RS, but the same as Opel Astra OPC.

The potential hidden under the bonnet pleases Takanobu Ito, the Honda CEO, who said that the new Honda Civic Type R aims to set a new time record for a front wheel drive production car on the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit. Currently, the record belongs to Renault Megane RS Trophy, completing the 20.8 km (12.9 mi) of the Green Hell in 8 minutes and 7 seconds (8:07:97).

In addition to installing a new engine more powerful than the old generation, the Japanese engineers have prepared for the next generation Honda Civic Type R a new chassis with a revised suspension, a wider wheelbase, a recalibrated intervention for ESP and Brembo brakes, hidden behind the 19-inch wheels.

The final version of the new Honda Civic Type R could debut in early 2014, but its official commercial launch on the market will be made only in 2015. The Japanese car manufacturer wants to keep itx new model competitively priced, for instance Honda UK wanting a base price around the £25,000 mark.

Ahead of the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda has showcased the latest Civic Type R development car at its in-house test track in Tochigi, Japan. The currently camouflaged car is being put through its paces as part of an extensive testing process taking place in Europe and Japan, ahead of its much anticipated launch in 2015.

The Civic Type R will be the first model in Europe to have one of Honda’s all-new VTEC TURBO engines from Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology range. This 2 litre, direct injection, 4-cyclinder turbo engine is expected to have class-leading output in excess of 280ps and will be EURO 6 compliant.

Speaking during recent testing at the Nurburgring, Germany, Honda’s WTCC driver Gabriele Tarquini, gave his first driving impressions ‘The car and the characteristics of the car were fantastic. I was really impressed by the power and the torque of the engine but also by the set-up they achieved…The car is very pointed on the front and very fast to change direction’. ‘This car is very close to my racing car and you can feel very well the DNA of Type R.’[/learn_more]
