Alfa Romeo announced the production release of the GT coupe, presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 and entered the market towards the end of that year. Designed by Bertone, the Alfa Romeo GT represented the coupe variant for the 147 and 156 models, with whom he shared the specific platform. Since 2003, Alfa Romeo GT was sold only in Italy in more than 25,000 copies.
After an exhilarating start, the car has lost ground because of cannibalization with the Brera and the Alfa Romeo neglect of management that no longer believed in the model, because the GT was never submitted to the facelift of mid-career. According to plans of Sergio Marchionne, Alfa Romeo GT will not be replaced, and the final version will be Quadrifoglio Oro for the Japanese market.
