2014 Chevrolet SS – Insanity or good Marketing?

2014 Chevrolet SS made its official debut as an all American real “rear-wheel-drive performance sedan,” but with a small clarification: it is made by General Motors Australia (Elizabeth). There was no reason for us to hold the Chevrolet SS presentation, since the presentation of the new Holden VF Commodore everyone knew how the new SS will look.

2014 Chevrolet SS debuted at the Daytona International Speedway while the SS racecar debut will happen at the Daytona 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The new SS is the first rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in the United States since the 1997 Chevrolet Impala SS.

2014 Chevrolet SS – Engine & Design & Price

The “rear-wheel-drive performance sedan”, as it called by Chevrolet, will go on sale in the fourth quarter of the year, with price yet to be revealed. The 2014 Chevrolet SS benefits from the rear-wheel drive architecture that is already available on the new Chevy Camaro, on the Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle and on the Holden’s VF Commodore.

2014 Chevrolet SS has under the bonnet a 6.2-liter V8 LS3 engine that delivers 415 horsepower with 415 pound-feet of torque (562 Nm), 35 horses and 47 Nm torque less than the engine of the new Corvette Stingray produces.

The engine is combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission with TAPshift paddles on the steering wheel. At least for now a manual transmission won’t be offered.

2014 Chevrolet SS will get from 0-to-60 mph (96 km/h) “in about five seconds,” according to the Chevrolet press release.

The suspension consists of MacPherson struts for the front axle and multilink independent on the rear axle. It has Brembo brakes with 355 mm ventilated discs in front and 4-Track four-piston calipers. The SS walks the earth with 19-inch forged aluminum wheels with Bridgestone tires size 245/40 front and 275/35 rear.

2014 Chevrolet SS has a near 50/50 weight ratio, thus contributing to an improved handling, and a low center of gravity due to the use of aluminum in the hood and in the trunk.

The interior can carry comfortably five passengers and has leather upholstery, adjustable bucket seats, ice blue ambient lighting, a Stat Engine button, 9 Bose speakers and color head-up display.

“Our goal was to create a car that delivers incredible grip and handling balance while cornering, while still being comfortable to drive on the road,” said David Leone, executive chief engineer GM global programs. “The perfect weight balance and lower center of gravity were a big part of that goal because it enabled the team to tune for a more comfortable highway ride without sacrificing handling or driver confidence while cornering at the limits.”

“From every angle, the Chevrolet SS says power and performance,” said John Cafaro design director Chevrolet passenger cars and small crossovers. “The combination of an aggressive rear-wheel drive stance and body-side attitude with the right balance of detail and refinement inside and out are the perfect home for Chevrolet’s V-8 performance package.”
