2013 Renault Clio RS – Engine & Design & Price
The main change between the old generation Clio RS and the 2013 Renault Clio RS comes in the engine chapter. The French have abandoned the 1998 cc aspirated unit of, which delivered 203 hp at 7,100 rpm and 158 lb-ft (215 Nm) at 5,400 rpm. The new Clio RS has a 1.6 turbo petrol engine delivering 200 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and has 177 pound-feet of torque (240 Nm) available from 1,750 rpm.
The front-wheel drive was preserved, but gave up the three-door body for a more practical version with five doors with a bigger luggage compartment. The new generation is longer, wider and with a longer wheelbase than the old Clio 3 RS.
The new 2013 Renault Clio RS is offered only in the company of the 6-speed EDC transmission, the old six-speed manual unit no longer being available. The full name of the new generation Clio RS includes the 200 EDC term, to mark the presence of this double clutch six-speed transmission.
2013 Renault Clio RS has a mixed fuel efficiency 6.3 liters/100 km (37.3 mpg US; 44.8 mpg imperial), 5.1 liters/100 km (46.1 mpg US; 55.4 mpg imperial) on highway and a city mixed fuel economy of 8.1 liters/100 km (29 mpg US; 34.9 mpg imperial) and 144 grams/kilometer CO2 emissions.
Renault announced a drag coefficient of 0.71 CdA. The new Clio RS is able to travel a quarter mile (400 meters) with standing start in 14.6 seconds, the 0.62 mile (1 km) is covered in 27.1 seconds. The extra 80 to 120 km/h in fourth gear takes just 4.5 seconds.
The 1.6-liter turbocharged unit develops 124 hp per liter, reasonable value, while the old 2.0 aspirated engine offered 100 hp per liter. Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) is achieved in 6.7 seconds.
Ever since the development phase of the new generation, Renault aimed to provide a higher level of torque in the lower speed range and improve throttle response throughout the rev range, so the propeller provides maximum torque to almost 6,000 rpm. The French emphasize that the 2013 Renault Clio RS is at the same time a genuine Renault Sport model and also can be a docile little car. Precisely that is why the ESP has several operation modes and the car’s behavior can be changed by pressing a button and customized via the RS Monitor interface.
The three settings of the R.S. Drive switch are: Normal, Sport and Race. The third setting is by far the most “hardcore” – the gear change is only done manually, the switching time is achieved in less than 150 milliseconds, the launch control function is available (also applies for the Sport mode), the ESP is turned off completely, and the power steering is firm. The Normal driving setting includes a softer acceleration pedal, which responds progressively, the engine is quieter, the transmission changes to the comfort mode, and the power steering is also softer.
Renault Sport engineers have introduced a set of special front shock absorbers. In short, the front dampers to encompass a set of compensators, which provide excellent results in terms of performance, progression and comfort, the whole system being called Hydraulic Compression Control. The brake system integrates 320 mm discs on the front axle and 260 millimeters at the rear axle. The anti-roll bar fitted to the rear axle is 10% stronger than that of Clio 3 RS and 60% stronger than that of Clio 4.
In the list of optional equipment we find elements such as the Cup Package which includes a Cup chassis, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, the RS Monitor 2.0 telemetry system and the yellow “Sirius” paint, exclusively used for RS versions of Renault. As standard it has features like the start/stop button, keyless car entry, Bluetooth and USB support, the new R-Link entertainment system and navigation with touchscreen.
2013 Renault Clio RS features a new front bumper with large air intakes, new spoiler, LED daytime running LED, air diffuser and dual trapezoidal tailpipes exhaust. Inside we have standard bucket seats with natural selection, all dressed in leather.
