The French will bring at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show the new generation 2014 Peugeot 308 completely changed. It has a fresher design – similar to what we saw at the new Peugeot 2008 compact crossover, a refined interior and a new modular platform that will be used by many PSA models.
Peugeot 308, the compact model of the manufacturer from Sochaux will receive at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show (10-22 September, Messegelände – Exhibition Center, Frankfurt am Main) a new generation. This launch was announced and expected for a while, a renewal of the compact segment in the Peugeot range being necessary, given the large number of rivals who have received a new generation.
2014 Peugeot 308 – Design & Engine
The French from Peugeot have avoided the name change together with the new generation, preferring to keep the “308” designation for several reasons, one of which is the existence of 301 and 309 models, two potential names for the replacement of 308.
The new 2014 Peugeot 308 model has the difficult role to revitalize brand’s position within the competitive environment the of compact hatchbacks, dominated for some time now by the Volkswagen Golf.
The new Peugeot 308 has now a modular platform called EMP2 (Efficient Modular Platform 2). This brings a significant reduction in weight and improves dynamics and handling of the new compact car. The developers of the new architecture have made 116 patents regarding the new platform, which means that 2014 Peugeot 308 is hiding many pleasant surprises in this chapter. The new platform is made of steel, aluminum and other composite materials, PSA promising increased safety, driving pleasure, comfort and reduced fuel consumption, since it weighs 70 kg (155 lbs) less than the previous one.
Compared with the previous generation, we mention an average mass difference of 310 pounds (140 kilograms), which is not insignificant. The green version of the new Peugeot 308 will record emissions of 85 grams of CO2 per kilometer, according to the first numbers released by the French car manufacturer.
Most definitely the new Peugeot 308 will have a range of four- and three-cylinder petrol and diesel engines with a capacity from 1.2- to 2.0-liters, delivering from 90 to 160 horsepower. It is likely to also have a hybrid HYbrid4 version, which combines a diesel engine with an electric motor. The strongest version – 308 GTI – will deliver over 200 horses.
With the new generation of the 308, Peugeot tried to make a leap forward at several chapters. The French want to grow both in terms of perceived quality and in terms of performance and capabilities. The new 2014 Peugeot 308 will be built at the Peugeot factory in Sochaux, while engines will be delivered by the Trémery and Douvrin factories.
2014 Peugeot 308 has front-back LED lights, a length of 4.25 meters (167.3 in) and 1.46 meters (57.5 in) tall, making it slightly smaller and lower than the previous 308 generation. Inside everything is arranged in a way so that the driver can concentrate exclusively on driving. It features a head-up display in the instrument panel, and a large 9.7 “touchscreen, which resulted in fewer buttons on the dashboard.
Peugeot says that the new 308 has a better quality than the previous generation, as each element of the interior and the exterior was developed and refined with extreme attention to details. The more expensive and better quality materials added a sense of sophistication and maturity. The luggage compartment reaches 470 liters (16.6 cu-ft).
The 2014 Peugeot 308 will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2013, while the sales will start in a few markets on Europe in late 2013 and on UK starting with January 2014.
“The new Peugeot 308 has a pure and technological exterior design that speaks of high strength and high quality,” says Gilles Vidal, Design Director, Peugeot.
“When inside the car, one discovers a world of refined style, completely original in the world of hatchback cars, with a cockpit that is intense, innovative and intuitive; it is the Peugeot i-cockpit,” says Vincent Devos, New 308 Product Manager, Peugeot.
Advanced new modular platform for an outstanding driving experience: “On the road, driving pleasure is enhanced by the new EMP2 modular platform. With its considerable reduction in weight, it contributes to the dynamism and easy handling of the New Peugeot 308,” says Laurent Declerck, New 308 Project Director, Peugeot.
