One of the most awaited and anticipated models of the 2012 New York Auto Show finally made its appearance. It’s the new generation Dodge Viper about which it was originally thought will no longer have a successor.
The Americans couldn’t let one of the Chrysler Group’s iconic model to die and, along with the Italians from Fiat, they have given rise to the offspring that gets the Viper name and add before the SRT abbreviation – from the performance division of Dodge.

Compared with the old generation, the new 2013 SRT Viper adopts aluminum doors and roof, the boot door and hood being made from carbon fiber. All designed to reduce the total mass of the muscle car.

Under the hood, the recipe is relatively identical to its predecessor: a V10 engine with a generous capacity – 8.4 liters, capable of delivering 640 bhp (477 kW/649 PS) and a torque of 812 Nm (600 lb/ft), the world’s largest value for a naturally aspirated series engine .
The resources of the new 2013 SRT Viper are sent only to the rear axle via a 6-speed Tremec TR6060 manual gearbox, which enables the top speed in sixth gear at 6,200 revs.
And because such a piece of power should be exploited properly, the chassis has been recalibrated and now has a 50% higher torsional rigidity. The suspension was revised and the total mass was reduced by 100 lbs (45 kg) by using lightweight materials.
On the new chassis has been mounted, unlike the old generation, a range of active safety features like electronic traction and stability control, and the ABS, acting on 13.9 inch (352 mm) discs and on the four piston Brembo calipers.
All this mechanical package available on the 2013 SRT Viper is wrapped in a new lighter bodywork, much like the original design. The design lines of an American car purist are preserved, but contemporary elements such as the front and rear LED lights appear. The front bumper became more discreet, with a lower air intake, rather reminding of the Ferrari models. The visual aggression is complemented by a set of forged wheels with five spokes, made of aluminum, available in three different finishes, fitted with Pirelli P Zero Z-rated tires that were designed specifically for the Viper.
The Americans were careful to answer criticisms aiming at the interior of the car. The center console is dominated by a 8.4-inch LCD screen, on which passengers can find all the car’s functions. The quality appearance was induced through the whole interior with leather upholstery and by inserting new Kevlar and fiberglass seats, which were positioned 0.8 inches (20 mm) lower than the old Viper SRT. The official press release stated that, thanks to the new seats, the 2013 SRT Viper has the most spacious interior in history.
The new 2013 SRT Viper supercar comes available in two versions: SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS. Although the differences are not big in terms of aesthetics, the second version has a two-mode active suspension, Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers and two driving settings: one for the road and one for track. Both versions have the support system for standstill acceleration (launch control).
