Aston Martin Rapide S – Design & Engine
The new Aston Martin Rapide S appears on the market to fight, among others, the newly launched 2014 Audi RS7 Sportback and 2014 Maserati Quattroporte. With 550 horsepower at 6,750 rpm squeezed from a 6.0-liter V12 engine (AM11 engine: 5,935 cc naturally aspirated), Rapide S develops 80 more ponies than the “normal” version, which means that becomes more powerful than a DB9 or Vantage V12. Torque is likewise up to 457 pound-feet (620 Nm) at 5,000 rpm.
In terms of performance, the new Aston Martin Rapide S announces a top speed of 190 mph (304 km/h), while the time for 0-60 mph (100 km/h) is relatively modest: 4.7 seconds if we look at some of its opponents. Thus, if the new Quattroporte V8 announces 4.7 seconds for 62 mph, the “German” performance group, consisting of Audi RS6, Audi RS7, Mercedes E63 AMG and Porsche Panamera Turbo S manages to achieve in corpore under 4 seconds . Aston Martin Rapide S remains, however, with the advantage of a very high level of exclusivity.
The new Aston Martin Rapide S is significantly more economical than before. European CO2 emissions drop by 7 g/100 km – from 355 g/km to 332 g/km – while fuel efficiency now stands at 19.9 mpg on the official EU combined cycle (US data to be confirmed).
At the aesthetic level, Aston Martin Rapide S borrows the grille shape from One-77, thus no longer resembling with the “classic” Aston Martin models thanks to the new modernized front. The British model receives an aggressive front doubled by the suspension system with shock absorbers adjustable in height.
Aston Martin Rapide S will be officially unveiled in Geneva, March 5. The sale price isn’t public yet, but we expect to be somewhere above £130,000 ($200,000), so most certainly the ‘S’ stands for “So Not Gonna Happen On My Salary.”
Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ulrich Bez said: “The Rapide S is to me, without doubt, the most beautiful four-door sports car on the market today. This is, very clearly, the power of luxury in action.
The car’s stunning visual appeal is now matched by a much more powerful and yet more efficient engine – our exceptional new AM11 V12 – which increases massively both the excitement and performance potential of the Rapide S.
It is a four-door sports car that uniquely combines luxury, style and sporting excitement in Aston Martin’s most flexible and accommodating silhouette. Purity of proportion and exceptional elegance are mixed with truly sensational dynamic performance – this is the four-door sports car in its most versatile form and I am sure our customers around the world are going to love it!”
