Maserati revealed the first official pictures and information of the new 2014 Maserati Ghibli, the four-door sports executive sedan which will activate in the premium segment, where Mercedes E-Class, Audi A6 and BMW 5 Series will rival it.
After a series of unofficial images and a video teaser, Maserati decided to reveal its mysterious model, scheduled for a world debut at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, next week. As expected, the new model unveiled by the Italian luxury car manufacturer is the much awaited 2014 Maserati Ghibli, the first brand’s model in the E segment. The luxury sedan will have the task of stealing from customers of more successful models like BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class or Audi A6.
2014 Maserati Ghibli – Design & Engine
The Italians weren’t impressed by the reputation of the competition and it borrows the same subframe and electrically adjustable suspension from Maserati Quattroporte. The new executive sedan will be built on the same platform as Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Lancia Thema, the generously proportioned aluminum chassis (nearly 5 meters / 16.4 feet).
The attractive design is drawn by the Maserati creative office with the help of Lorenzo Ramaciotti (ex-Pininfarina designer). The exterior borrows several elements from Quattroporte, but has a more aggressive and attractive design.
At this recipe the Italians add the first Diesel engine in the history of the brand. It is a 3.0-liter V6 unit, already used on several models in the Fiat-Chrysler Group. Its use is not surprising anyone, the European public loving the high performance diesels and all the German rivals offer such engines.
The diesel powered engine will propel the base version of the 2014 Maserati Ghibli, version that will be at the same time the most affordable model from the Maserati range.
Besides the diesel unit, Maserati will provide two power versions for the 3.0-liter V6 Petrol engine. This unit was developed under the supervision of Paolo Martinelli, Head of Fiat engines, the same propulsion specialist with whom Michael Schumacher and Ferrari won titles in Formula 1.
The first version of the 3.0-liter V6 engine will offer 330 horsepower, enough to stand up to German engines. The top version of the V6 unit will guarantee 410 horsepower.
Whatever the option under the bonnet, it will be paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shift. Moreover, for the top motorization, Maserati will offer the Q4 all-wheel drive.
The interior will remind everyone that 2014 Maserati Ghibli is a luxury model. The Italians aim to exceed the German offer with Poltrona Frau leather upholstery as standard and the Bowers & Wilkins sound system in the list of options.
The 2014 Maserati Ghibli world debut will be recorded next week at the Shanghai Auto Show. The first European appearance will take place at the Goodwood Festival. Msaserati will organize a promotional European tour, before delivering the first copy of the series, scheduled to arrive on the street by the end of this summer.
The new four-door sports executive sedan will be produced at the former Bertone plant near Turin (Carrozzeria Bertone – which was acquired by Fiat three years ago), where Quattroporte is currently produced. Together, the two models will help the Italian car manufacturer to achieve the growth plan to sell 50,000 cars per year. They will be joined in the coming years by the Levante SUV, already anticipated by a concept.
