Just like its brothers, Continental GT and Continental GTC, the new 2014 Bentley Continental Flying Spur adopts a new fascia, dominated by the traditional round headlights, but now feature with LED lights, and the imposing grille. The profile has become somewhat elongated and the bonnet line is lowered, thanks to a easily carved last row of pillars. Classic taillights were also replaced with new horizontal LED lights.
While retaining the same platform, Bentley Continental Flying Spur is 50 kilograms (110.2 lbs) lighter thanks to the use of some materials in the body structure composition. The chassis was also modified, taking advantage from a completely revised suspension with softer dampers – 10% front and 13% rear. The electric steering mechanism is new and the ESC stability control system has been improved.
The chassis has been revised, having a with 4% increase of the torsional rigidity – 36.500 Nm/degree. It weighs 50 kilograms (110.2 lbs) less thanks to the aluminum and composite polymers used.
Inside, 2014 Bentley Continental Flying Spur claims that benefits from over 600 new components. It seems that from the old car only things that remained are the sun visors, door handles, armrests and a few pieces from the dashboard and the center console. The design is slightly fresh, but not giving up the classic lines that have made the brand famous.
Bentley offers the new Flying Spur in two new configurations for four or five passengers. Also, to attract highly demanding customers, Bentley offers the Multi-Media Specification package that allows connection of auxiliary equipment, laptop or tablet, to the car’s Wi-Fi system. People on the rear seats will have integrated two 10-inch screens and a 64 GB storage capacity for music.
2014 Bentley Continental Flying Spur has an enhanced version of the twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 engine capable of developing 616 horsepower and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque. It is an important passage from the 560 horsepower and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) offered by the old model.
The new resources are managed by an 8-speed transmission and a 40/60 all-wheel drive system. The entire ensemble can provide a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds and a top speed of 322 km/h (200 mph).
In the fuel efficiency chapter, the new Flying Spur delivers a combined cycle fuel economy of 19.2 mpg (14.7 liters/100 km), and CO2 emissions of 343 g/km – impressive figures for a 12-cylinder ultra-luxury, high performance sedan.
By the end of this year, the engine range will be completed by a 4.0-liter V8 with over 500 hp and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft). A Speed version is also being prepared, powered by the same W12 engine, but with a slightly higher power.
2014 Bentley Continental Flying Spur price will surely start from just under $300,000 for the base model. The new Continental Flying Spur will arrive on the European and North American market by the end of this summer.
Bentley Chairman and Chief Executive, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, comments “Bentley’s new Flying Spur is the ultimate luxury performance sedan.
