Audi A3 was named World Car of the Year 2014. The complete winners list also includes Porsche 911 GT3, BMW i3 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
Like every year when this award has been granted, the winners were announced at a special ceremony conducted in New York. Audi A3 was not the only winner in the 2014 edition of WCOTY, the winners list including BMW i3, Porsche 911 GT3 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
WCOTY 2014 – The Winners
Audi A3 was the winner of the all-important award World Car of the Year edition in 2014, defeating the other two finalists, Mazda3 and BMW 4 Series. The German model won just a year after its platform brother, Volkswagen Golf VII.
Although it did not win the big award with 4 Series, BMW received two other awards at WCOTY 2014 both with BMW i3: World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car of the Year. Meanwhile, Porsche 911 GT3 was named World Performance Car of the Year and Mercedes-Benz S-Class is World Luxury Car of the Year.
In the World Luxury Car of the Year category, Mercedes-Benz S-Class defeated Bentley Flying Spur and Range Rover Sport. For the World Performance Car of the Year three models were nominated: Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Ferrari 458 Speciale and Porsche 911 GT3, the German model being named as the winner. For the World Green Car of the Year distinction Audi A3 Sportback g-tron, BMW i3 and Volkswagen XL1 were involved, the title being won by the small electric model from Munich. BMW i3 also won the World Car Design of the Year in front of Mazda3 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
The Audi won the first edition of World Car of the Year, conducted in 2004, with the A6 model at that time. The World Car of the Year awards are granted by an independent committee, which is not affiliated with any commercial entity, the entire organization is non-profit. All started in 2003 with the role of reflecting the global auto market conditions and to recognize and reward automotive excellence. The World Car of the Year 2014 awards were voted by a jury of 69 journalists representing 22 countries. Each jury member was selected based on its experience, influence and credibility.
The best represented brand at the 2014 edition of the competition was BMW, which reached the final with three of the four models listed, the Bavarians managed to win two awards with the i3 model. In the past five years, Volkswagen has achieved four wins in the main category of the contest, the last two were consecutive.
