Ford has launched a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine, with 3 variants of 100, 120 and 125 hp, very fast and very quiet!Ford launched a turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine and the production began back in November in Koln.
Starting this month, the same engine will be built in their new factory found in Craiova – Romania. These two plants will run at full power to produce 800,000 engines in the next three years ensuring the demandings at least for Europe.
There will be three versions of this 1 liter EcoBoost engine: 100, 120 and 125 hp. The first model already with this new engine is the Ford Focus, and in June, when we’ll have the first B-Max’s, this interesting new engine will take its place under this bonnet as well. C-Max and Grand C-Max will also get this upgrade as soon as possible.
A test drive with this “little engine” revealed an incredibly pleasant surprise. 1.0 liters, 125 hp and a 6-speed manual gearbox?? Ford Focus, a compact car and a three-cylinder engine? At first sight it seems like a very slow engine, not potent at all! You start thinking at its small displacement and something nifty, lazy and noisy. But Ford has used the latest available technology in their research centers in Germany and England and produced a truly exceptional engine.
Not an impressive start in the first two steps, but then the engine power is unleashed. Maximum torque occurs immediately at 1400 rotations per minute and is present for up to 4,500 rpm.
Consumption? Not really as by the book
When Ford announced consumption for this engine, it was noting that this particular engine will be 1liter/100km more economical than his rivals in this segment.
We are talking about an average consumption of 5.0 litres/100 km. In the technical manual, next to the urban consumption, the manufacturer added 6.3 l/100 km, while for extra-urban 4.2 l/100 km.
But reality is quite different. In mixed case, it is true, a bit pushed, the focus 1.0 liter engine took not less than 7 liters/100km.
Probably if you are a ..retired driver and like to drive…slow and use no air conditioning, you may decrease by one liter per 100 km. That’s 6 l/100 km. 5 l/100 km’s hard to get if you ask me but if you’re on the top of a hill and have the wind on your side then you MIGHT have the chance!
