After rumors of a potential bankruptcy, appeared in the last days, Bertone confirms the critical financial situation. The Italian coach builder, renowned for the design of models who wrote automotive history, officially announced imminent bankruptcy.

Bertone broken-down by financial problems

Bertone motivated the situation trough the large number of debts and the need to cover costs. It seems that the company’s situation is very precarious, given that all the accounts are blocked and employees have not worked for about a month and a half.

The difficult times comes just two years after Bertone celebrated en fanfare the centennial at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, where they exposed the Nuccio concept in an attempt to revive older design elements.

The employees’ wages have not been paid for more than six months, 160 employees were laid off, and many parts suppliers are pressing the company’s representatives to recover the money owed. The Bertone financial problems are surprising given the fact that they managed to get over 20 million EUR in 2013 due to Chinese customers.

Bertone tried to save itselves trough Ateliere Bertone, a division dedicated to special projects carried out for customers who want a unique design, bearing, of course, their mark. The special division didn’t have expected success, neither the creation of concepts produced for the Geneva Motor Show, in order to attract investors.

The creator of legendary Lamborghini Miura will have to find a buyer in the coming months, unsettlement of the critical financial situation being synonymous with brand’s death. Several companies have shown interest in buying the famous Italian brand, although its future was even more endangered after losing a large part of the design team due to the financial instability.

Bertone signed globally recognized creations such as the Lamborghini Miura, BMW 3200 CS, 1984 Chevrolet Camaro, Lancia Stratos, Lamborghini Countach and many more. Among recent works, we name the beautiful Bertone Mantide and the new concepts imagined for Jaguar and Alfa Romeo.
