2013 Detroit Auto Show (North American International Auto Show) started with the awarding ceremony for the “2013 North American Car of the Year.” This year, the title went to the all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS, while the updated 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup won the “2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year” award.

This year, the “North American Car of the Year” has reached the 20th edition, the award being accorded by a panel of 49 auto writers, editors and broadcasters representing dozens of media outlets. Somewhat logical that in a country where nationalism is elevated to art, the winner was an all American model. It’s about the 2013 Cadillac ATS, General Motors proposal for mid-premium segment, having opponents like BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class.
In the final, Cadillac ATS had to go over a pretty solid competition, the 2013 Ford Fusion and 2013 Honda Accord. The jury decided to give the supreme distinction to the 2013 Cadillac ATS because of its style and innovative design that cut weight, allowing smaller engines and higher mileage ratings (but mostly because they considered that this new production model will be able to duel with the German competition).
The journalists chose the 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 as the best truck/utility of the year. For the “2013 North American Truck/Utility of the Year” award, the American model had to compete in the final with Ford C-Max and Mazda CX-5.
The different affiliations of the jurors make the award particular and especially desirable for automakers. Because the awards are not sponsored by a for-profit organization, the general public tends to give them a little more credit and don’t automatically suspect that the awards were “sold” to an automaker in return for major spending on advertising.
“This is a very meaningful honor for the entire Cadillac team, especially the men and women who build the ATS in Lansing, Mich., and our dedicated and talented designers and engineers,” Bob Ferguson, GM vice president, global Cadillac, said in a statement.
“It feels like a three-point buzzer beater,” said Fred Diaz, Ram CEO. He said the Ram came out a winner because of (Chrysler and Fiat CEO) Sergio Marchionne “telling us ‘Boys, it’s time to go big or go home’.”
