Developed in collaboration with the Americans from Tesla, the new Toyota RAV4 EV was developed in 22 months and offer customers the same performance and same interior space such as the classic version of the Japanese compact SUV.
The new version will be sold exclusively in California the first phase, a “heaven” for hybrid and electric vehicles, the market entry for the new model will take place this summer. Later, new electric SUV will be sold in other U.S. states, the objective of the Japanese car manufacturer being to find 2,600 customers in the next three years for Toyota RAV4 EV.
The starting price for Toyota RAV4 EV will be, in the U.S., $49,800, but from this amount will be deducted the bonuses that each U.S. state grants those who are oriented towards this type of model.
The new Toyota RAV4 EV has a range of 100 miles (160 kilometers), accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 7.0 seconds in sport mode and comes with a top speed limited to 85 mph (135 km/h). The engine develops 154 horsepower in maximum load and the battery is guaranteed 8 years or 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers). Full battery charging time is six hours on a 240V/40A charger.
We had heard that Toyota RAV4 EV will be lease only, but the official press release says the car “will go on sale in late summer 2012 through select dealers, initially in four major California metropolitan markets.” Those markets are Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles/Orange County and San Diego.
The vehicle will be made at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc., plant in Woodstock, Ontario, and the battery and powertrain are designed by Tesla.
The japanese are known for making environmental friendly and very durable cars. If you are looking to buy a car which is cheap and has cheap road tax then you should definitely be looking in to manufacturers such as Honda who make greats models such as the Honda cr-z.
