BMW and Pininfarina will present the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este the first fruit of their collaboration: BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe – the redesigned version of the current BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.
After they aroused the public interest with a series of teasers and a brief press release, BMW finally reveals the full photo gallery with the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept. The prototype is a luxurious interpretation of a BMW coupe, seen through the eyes of a top designer from the automotive world.
BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe – Design & Engine
Expected to debut at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the new BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe retains the defining elements of a BMW: the long wheelbase, the wider engine bonnet, the short overhangs and a passenger cabin pushed backwards, with a roof line that slopes down slightly.
Also reminiscent of the BMW identity is the front double grille, a specific trade mark of the Munich brand. Practically, all the front look focuses on the mat aluminum and black metal inserts on the grille. The grid leans towards the road to suggest aggressiveness and remember the old models of the brand.
The bonnet, beneath which lies a V12 engine, was also redesigned, while the optical blocks with LED technology offers a contemporary look bearing the Pininfarina mark. The front is complemented by a bumper with a uniform and generous air intake, with chrome inserts.
The BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe profile is contoured with the aid of the amplified bosses, at the base of which the Pininfarina logo appears. The generous bosses host some five-spoke 21-inch rims, with an individualist design, marked by aluminum finishes and black inserts, synonymous with the front grille.
The rear comes with a new connection to the trunk door and the roof line. The L-shaped taillights, specific to the BMW models, receives a more elaborate design line, smooth and fluid.
Inside, the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe concept receives new seats with generous lateral support signed by Pininfarina, and a driver-oriented dashboard with a redesigned ergonomy. The star of the interior is, undoubtedly, the Kauri wood, originating from the marshes from New Zealand, with an estimated age of 48,000 years. All wooden elements found inside was made of a single piece of Kauri, polished and varnished, which changes color from golden to red and brown, depending to the incidence of light.
The leather comes from Italy, from the famous Fogliazzo leather factory, and has black and brown Tobacco colors. The ceiling was also customized with Italian virgin wool with an “Principe di Galles” motif.
With the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé, the BMW Design team took up exclusive design aspects such as luxury and elegance and fed them into a creative exchange with long-established specialist car designer and manufacturer Pininfarina. In this elaborately created one-off, the renowned companies BMW Group and Pininfarina joined forces to bring an idea to fruition: “The appeal of this collaboration with Pininfarina is that you get another, very different and special angle on facets like luxury and exclusivity,” notes Karim Habib, Head of BMW Design. “The Italian company, after all, has always been a byword for these criteria in particular, demonstrating time and again its keen sensitivity and exceptional finesse in these areas. In Pininfarina we have found the ideal partner to lend shape to this vehicle concept.”
“The result of this cooperative venture is far greater than the sum of its parts,” says Fabio Filippini, Head of Design at Pininfarina. “When two such tradition-rich and experienced brands join forces to turn a vision into reality, something utterly new and exciting emerges. From start to finish, this project was defined by a mutual respect for the identity of the other company.”
“The BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé has an extraordinary impact. It expresses hallmark BMW values such as luxury and sheer presence in a highly elegant form,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design. “I admire the reductive clarity and precision in Pininfarina’s design. Their expectations for the end result have been just as high as ours, and their understanding of design perfectly complements the BMW design DNA for a vehicle of this kind.”
