Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept

The truck division of Mercedes-Benz has developed an aerodynamic semitrailer tractor study design called Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept. This helps save 2,000 liters (528 US gallons, 440 Imperial gallons) of fuel every 150,000 kilometers (93,206 miles).

Mercedes-Benz has developed a special semitrailer tractor, which helps save fuel by reducing air resistance. Unfortunately, the Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept is only a concept and it is half a meter (8 inches) longer than the maximum allowed on the roads without special authorization.

Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept – the innovations

Nevertheless, the Germans innovation is not to be ignored. Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept can save up to 2,000 liters (528 US gallons, 440 Imperial gallons) of fuel and 5 tones of CO2 per year, in the case of an average mileage of 150,000 km(93,206 miles). Its secret lies in ??aerodynamic changes, which reduce drag by 18%.

Mercedes-Benz presented the new semitrailer tractor at the auto exhibition Trailer 2011, which took place between 25 and 29 November in Kortrijik, Belgium. The Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept has already been tested by Mercedes-Benz engineers, which confirmed the laboratory estimates.

A Mercedes-Benz Actros equipped with an aerodynamic semitrailer was driven between Rotterdam and Szczecin. Despite the fact that it had a load of 40 tons (80,000 lbs), the platform recorded a 25.1 liters/100 km (9.37 US gallons, 11.25 Imperial gallons) consumption, with 7.6% less than the same platform, driven under the same conditions but without aerodynamic improvements.

Mercedes Aero Trailer Concept has a special set of side panels, a rear diffuser, the back is covered and the front is optimized to reduce drag when used together with Mercedes-Benz Actros. The cargo area remains unchanged.
