Honda Urban SUV Concept was officially unveiled at 2013 Detroit Auto Show (North American International Auto Show), a promoter of the future Japanese design philosophy and a future rival for the popular 4×4 Nissan Juke.
Detroit Auto Show 2013 marked the debut of an important model for the evolution of Honda brand, which launched on this occasion the Urban SUV concept. This world premiere paves the way for an urban 4×4, as the name suggests. Besides, Urban SUV introduced a new design philosophy, that can be identified on the small-class models of the Japanese manufacturer.

Honda Urban SUV Concept – Design & Engine
The production version of the new Urban SUV will actually be the Honda reply for Nissan Juke pioneer, the most popular and best-selling model in the segment. With a length of 169.3 inches (4300 mm), the new Honda Urban SUV Concept is 9 inches (230 mm) shorter than CR-V, a model depending on which will position both in terms of price and space.
Honda Urban SUV Concept will create a model developed on the Global Compact Series platform, currently found on the Jazz hatchback and the City sedan, that’s sold in several emerging markets. Using this architecture will enable easy engines and transmissions adaptation, reunited under the name Earth Dreams. Moreover, this strategy will allow them to reach their target of 1.6 million Global Compact Series platform cars, sold per year, by 2016.
In the official press release, Honda claims that its first production model of a small class SUV will have a modern interior, the latest generation of its multimedia systems and will benefit from a central fuel tank configuration, Honda Urban SUV Concept will also benefiting from the “Magic Seat” technology that allows many configurations of the rear bench as well as an extremely easy folding.
Honda confirmed that with its new crossover will debut a new telematics system, and it will use one of Honda’s new Earth Dreams engines; this engine could be a 1.5-liter I4 paired with a continuously variable transmission.
Honda Urban SUV is expected to debut in Japan by the end of 2013,but will reach the American market only in 2014. There are no information yet about a launch on the European market, but this could be scheduled for the end of 2013.
The new Honda Urban SUV will be manufactured at a new Honda assembly plant, located near Celaya, Mexico, expected to open in the spring of 2014, with an assembly capacity of 200,000 units.
“No one has had greater success with small cars than Honda, and this Urban SUV Concept will create new value in the growing small-SUV segment,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda. “With the continued expansion of our North American manufacturing operations, we expect fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive ‘small’ cars to play a key role in meeting the needs of our customers in the U.S.”
