2014 Lexus IS was officially unveiled by the Japanese manufacturer at 2013 Detroit Auto Show (North American International Auto Show), a new fearsome rival in the premium segment for BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.
After the teaser image type, published before NAIAS 2013, Lexus returned with a set of official photos of the new 2014 Lexus IS. The medium segment model is coming to compete in a highly disputed segment, currently dominated by major players as BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.

2014 Lexus IS – Design & Engine
As anticipated, the design of the 2014 Lexus IS it is inspired by the design lines of the LF-CC concept , presented last fall at the Paris Auto Show. The front is dominated by the trapezoid shaped grille, that’s already a defining characteristic of Lexus design. The optical blocks have an extremely aggressive design, being sharper and equipped with L-shaped LED lights.
To enhance the aggressive character, Lexus have also equipped the revealed models with the F-Sport package. This package improves the design with a slightly larger revised grille and a new spoiler.
Inside, Toyota has chosen a driver-oriented cockpit, more ergonomic and with a generous interior space thanks to the long wheelbase. According to Toyota, the increased wheelbase and the much thinner seats guarantee the largest space of the segment for the back seats passengers for the new Lexus IS. The seatbacks fold 60/40 can be folded for additional utility.
The driving position also became more sporty, while the wheel itself was inspired by the LFA supercar. The dashboard is completed by the Lexus multimedia system, an analog clock and electrostatic switchers for air conditioning that’s also a first in the segment.
For the 2014 Lexus IS versions that are equipped with the F-Sport package, the seats are sport and improved with a new technology that ensures good lateral support and comfort.
2014 Lexus IS will feature both rear- and all-wheel drive models in both 2.5-liter V6 (IS250) and 3.5-liter V6 (IS350) trims. Lexus also showed an IS300h hybrid model at their stand, but it is earmarked for Lexus’ home market of Japan, along with Europe and other markets. No word yet on why the model probably won’t be sold in North America.
Lexus did not provided much information about what we see under the bonnet of the European model. It however indicated that in Europe the medium segment model will be available only in IS250 and IS300h versions. The last one is a premiere, the first hybrid ever for Lexus IS.
The 2014 Lexus IS is scheduled to hit dealers in June.
“I adopted an entirely different approach to the development of the all-new IS,” said Junichi Furuyama, IS chief engineer. “Specifically, it was to make an entertaining driving experience a major premise behind all aspects of performance.
“The conventional approach involves developing each individual aspect in the hope that they will combine to offer an engaging driving experience. By contrast, development of the new IS flipped this process on its head, first establishing the pleasurable driving experience owners desire, and then developing the individual performance elements to support it.”
