Detroit Auto Show 2012 (North American International Auto Show – NAIAS 2012) is the first important event of the year. It opens the series of large Auto Shows and it’s a barometer of the U.S. automobile industry. Although Detroit itself is a city sad and gloomy, the auto show held here is pretty bright. Every year in early January, the motoring press gathers at Cobo Center to see what the auto manufacturers have prepared. And this year, the list of premieres wasn’t poor. We chose from the list only 10 models that we consider to be important and which we believe will have a global impact.

By far the most important Ford premiere at Detroit Auto Show 2012 was the presentation of the new Ford Fusion, called Ford Mondeo on the European market. To avoid confusion, it must be said that the Ford uses the Fusion trade name for the two models. In Europe, it designate a small class model based on the Fiesta, while in America has always been the name given to a mid-range sedan.

Until recently, the American Ford models were quite different from the European ones. The new global politics of Ford has changed this. Ford Focus is now common to both markets as well as Ford Fiesta. It’s time for the American public to see what a mid-range model European pedigree looks like, so the new 2013 Ford Fusion arises.

The new Mondeo / Fusion presented at Detroit keeps many design lines from the current Mondeo. Especially the back is very similar. In front however, we have a new chromed grille that looks good on an Aston Martin.

A complete change of style for the largest roadster from the Mercedes-Benz range. The new SL has a new and controversial look. We still don’t know if we like it or not.

The front is dominated by the atypically designed Mercedes headlights. The general line still has elements of the old generation. Leaving aside the look, the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL is stuffed with technology and the Stuttgart manufacturer now boasts an incredible threesome: SLK, SL and SLS. The new SL has now an aluminum bodywork which makes it lighter than ever.

Compared to the previous generation, the new Mercedes SL “slimed” with 310 lbs (140 kg). Under the hood we find more powerful V6 and V8 engines.

Also at the Mercedes-Benz stand is found an important model launched at Detroit Auto Show 2012. It’s the hybrid version of the E 300 Blutec model. Mercedes has chosen to use a hybrid powered car equipped with a diesel engine.

So far, only Peugeot also uses this solution. Mercedes says that this solution leads to a consumption of just 4.2 l/100 km (56 mpg US, 67 mpg UK) and 109 g/km of CO2. Regarding the carbon dioxide emissions, 2013 Mercedes-Benz E300 Bluetec Hybrid is better than his opponent BMW 520d EfficientDynamics which emits 119 g/km CO2.

Volkswagen has big plans with the new Beetle and to emphasize this they brought to Detroit Auto Show an electrically powered concept named E-Bugster. Volkswagen announced this way the future Beetle Convertible, the cut windshield and removable ceiling leaving no doubt about that. In addition, it is possible that Volkswagen will develop a full-electric version for the Beetle series.

The Volkswagen E-Bugster Concept present Detroit has approached a strong hot rod style look perfect for the American auto show. Besides the desire to impress the public, so Volkswagen announced a speedster version with only two-seat for the Beetle model that will be ready in 2014.

Dodge Dart it’s a very important model for the ChryslerFiat Group. The reason: the Americans have chosen to borrow an Italian platform for this model, so we have a Alfa Romeo Giulietta in a sedan version dedicated to the U.S. market.

Dodge revived a name with tradition in the brand’s history and the result – obtained with the help of Italian designers – is not bad. The new 2013 Dodge Dart looks good, has a futuristic interior and uses four-cylinder engines.

This is it! Hyundai brought to Detroit Auto Show the Turbo version of the Veloster model. We have thus an engine on the measure of the asymmetric appearance of Hyundai. Veloster Turbo uses a 1.6-liter engine with a turbine that develops 204 HP and 195 lb/ft (265 Nm) at 1750 rpm.

To emphasize the new engine that is hidden under the bonnet, Hyundai operated a number of aesthetic changes. 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo enjoys now a completely new grille, a redesigned front spoiler, with larger air sockets, new projectors, side skirts and a new rear bumper with two central exhaust pipes.

Porsche introduced officially at Detroit Auto Show 2012 the convertible version of Carrera 911. The present generation bearing the 991 indicative is already one of the most popular sport models around the globe. 2013 Porsche 911 Convertible is more than a 911 with no ceiling. It looks incredibly well, perhaps better than the coupe version.

The new Cabriolet is lighter and stiffer than the old generation and the soft-top is made from a composite material that is resistant and allows a faster folding. We also have a wind deflector that doesn’t takes up valuable space from the interior. 911 Cabriolet will be a new success for Porsche.

Mini brought at the American auto show the Roadster version of its latest creations: Mini Coupe. This model was so well received by the public, that Mini has decided to create a version without ceiling: 2013 Mini Roadster.

Mini manages to expand on all the niche segments of the market. With the new model, attacks the customers market of Audi TT Roadster, Mini promising that the new model drives as well as any other model in the range.

Chevrolet stunned the audience in Detroit with two spectacular concepts, but the most important model for the global market is Sonic RS, Aveo RS for the European market. While the hot model is announced only for America, chances are that a stronger version of Aveo will be marketed globally.

For strong sensations, the Americans will enjoy the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS animated 1.4-liter engine that develops 140 HP and 147.5 lb/ft (200 Nm). The RS model was also aesthetically modified to look more “evil”. Inside, customers will be spoiled with sports seats, a steering wheel with special inserts, aluminum pedals, a new shift lever for the manual transmission, dashboard instruments and a redesigned RS logo found in several places in the cockpit.

Hyundai also had another element of attraction at the American auto show. It’s the new generation Genesis coupe. The new model was present on the Internet in a few spy photos, but didn’t clearly know what it looked like. Hyundai brought it in all its glory at the Detroit Auto Show 2012.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe comes with two improved engines: GDI V6 that develops 350 HP and 194.7 lb/ft (264 Nm), and the 2.0 Turbo engine that provides 275 HP and 275 lb/ft (373 Nm). Genesis Coupe enjoys a number of aesthetic changes and an improved interior.
