Colin McRae Dirt 2 – Game Review

Mar 10, 2010

Colin McRae Dirt2 210x300 Colin McRae Dirt 2 Game ReviewColin McRae Rally series, in my view, is maybe the dominant name in the “rally game“. When I say that ,I think of Colin McRae Rally 2.0, the pixeled graphic, but with a unique feeling, the sound engine very successful in its time, with an inspection to pique your training. I think of the CMR 2005, with a nice graphics, many machines, a pretty good damage (but not so attentive with details as the CMR 04) and a “career” (as a game mode). I think at Dirt, who renamed the series, one with excessive demands for his time, with no snow, but the presence of a rally raid, which, I remember not to be seen than to CMR 2. Only with successful titles made in the past, Codemasters couldn’t come only with something new, as usual, but still to respect the tradition (?).

Storyline: lack of a story in itself brings a less. There is no particular story to follow in the game, as in previous titles. We are faced with a menu that reminds of Grid (menu style, nickname you choose, the logo of loading), but still one interactive with graphics inside and outside a trailer park where rests, between races, a rally driver. All races in single player are embedded in the World Tour. Here they are divided by city/country where they occur (Morocco, Japan, Los Angeles, Croatia, China), with and special events (X-Games, Rally Tour, challenge other drivers).

Gameplay: Where’s the snow? Or the rain? Controlling the cars is easier than in Dirt or CMR 2005, players will get used quickly how to handle the racing cars. Again we remember the Grid by the presence of flashbacks (the player can “to turn back time”). Trailblazer, Rally Cross, Rally, Gate Break, Time Attack are the racing modes witch you’ll be facing as the driver, the level of difficulty can be selected independently for each race. The car damage is weak (it takes several strokes and car accidents for the performance to suffer). In all events the player is placed against the big names in rally racing, as Dave Mirra, Ken Block. Some events are happening at night, something new and fun. Part of the gaining level up is purely in winning decorative elements for the car.

Graphics: People from the “stands” seem a little “square”. But at 90km/h who looked into the stands?  Dirt2 is the first game that has implemented support for DirectX 11. It is the reason why the PC game launch was delayed several months. In terms of graphics, the game makes little reproaches. Environment, landscape, mud, water, powder, fireworks, cars without certain parts of the body, everything is working well and in detail. I have to admit, during the game graphics reminded me of Dirt and Grid, although I can’t explain why.

The sound. On the sound they put an emphasis on reproduction noise made by car on route and in case of impact with the particles that hit the car. It is a good thing, which combined with the image provided by the camera inside the car and a pedal drive up the perfect recipe for an authentic rally experience. Comments (before, during and after the race), belonging to competitors, are initially funny, but throughout the career are repeating becoming a little disturbing. Songs that make up the soundtrack is entertaining, with rock, metal and Redneck styles who make you wanna go faster.

Overall, no one will be disappointed by the game. Maybe just bored, because Dirt Tour does not provide large gains intrigue or the process, and its completion does not offer anything! (even banality credits, typical of any final game …). A title who imposed himself, worthy of being called Colin McRae Dirt 2.
