Toyota is an important presence in the medium segment of the European car market. The Avensis has a faithful audience is appreciated for reliability and sturdiness. Even if the D segment is declining in Europe, customers preferring small and compact cars, the market remains, however, important for this kind of models. In the past three years, the segment average decreased but stabilized at 850,000 copies sold annually in Europe. It is a market dominated by fleets and company cars, but there are also private clients.
Since 1997, Toyota entered into this segment with the Avensis. Today, the third generation Avensis. The current model is on the market since 2009 and has undergone a facelift in 2011. Well, Toyota decided to invest not yet in a completely new generation platform preserved but heavily modified and its technical design to launch a ‘new’ Avensis. The new model is somewhere on the boundary between massive facelift and the new model is a solution that Toyota has used it in the past and for the third generation of the RAV4.
Engine / Transmission
With optical facelift, Toyota has transplanted a number of new engines on the new Avensis. We have thus two totally new diesel engines: a 1.6 diesel which replaces the old 2.0-liter D-4D diesel and 2.0 that brings new 2.2-liter pension. Both diesel engines are BMW provenance and will form the bulk of volumes as company cars or fleet. The European launch in Switzerland but I had the opportunity to test diesel engine of 1.6 liters and 112 hp on his Avensis wagon version, known as the official name datasheets Touring Sports.
It is an engine that emphasizes fuel economy, while the performance is only satisfactory. It’s a diesel that you will choose very rational companies or customers who want a sedan or station wagon segment very economic environment. Toyota is the only manufacturer to offer diesel engines of 100-120 horsepower in this segment, and the emergence of engine at first glance seem very small is to meet a demand as possible the actual market.
It is a silent motor, but to be used seriously if we want a sportier driving style. It is ideal for those who do not emphasize sportsmanship and need a car to move efficiently from one place to another. 1,598 cc engine meets standards and produces 112 horsepower Euro6 to 4,000 rev / min and 270 Nm available between 1,750 only and 2,250 rev / min. To send power to the front axle, Toyota uses a manual gearbox six-speed, precise utiizare but with a relatively short gear ratios. Given that power is limited, the new Avensis 1.6 D4-D model requires frequent changes of speed, especially in hill and two adults on board. Swiss mountain roads we needed including first gear to climb efficiently.
Toyota Avensis S Consumption
Aventajul this home 1.6 liter BMW diesel pump seen. It is one of the most efficient diesel engine in this class, the official average consumption is 4.2 liters / 100 km. This consumption is only matched by Peugeot 508 SW 1.6 e-HDI 115 hp and surpassed BlueMotion Volkswagen Passat 1.6 TDI 120 hp, it reported an average consumption of 4.1 liters / 100 km.
The Swiss reality in which we could put to the test this engine, the average consumption recorded by the onboard computer was 5.9 liters / 100 km. But consumption was obtained from a bluntly driving style and after two fairly steep ascent on the mountain roads of the Alps.
Although it is far from satisfying a driver with sporting pretensions, the new Avensis 1.6 D4-D is a model quite efficient when measured against direct competition, ie diesel engines of the same power range.
The 112 hp are enough to achieve a top speed of 180 km / h and Avensis needs 11.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h. Most competing models require acceleration times over 12 seconds. Avensis 1.6 D4’s performance-D are surpassed by those of the Passat Variant 1.6 TDI BLUMOTION, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 11 seconds, but Hyundai i40 and CV, 1.7-liter engine and 136 hp which needs only 10.6 seconds to reach 100 km / h. It is true that in the latter case we speak of a car that has over 20 extra horses.
Inside Toyota Avensis S
Toyota’s designers have made important efforts to transform the interior of the Avensis. They introduced some new elements that refreshes inside, but several issues remain unresolved. First, it is more difficult to find your correct driving position, and that because of the new seats. They are comfortable and provide enough lateral support, but are somewhat higher than those used previously. I would have liked and the height adjustment of the steering wheel is something larger to facilitate a better position to commands.
Excluding this adjustment problems, the interior of the Avensis is now more friendly. Designers have tried to quit rigor and provide a dash of color and the interior inserts can now be garnished with blue, silver or orange which are matched with a similar upholstery. Unfortunately, there are also some strong plastic and unpleasant to the touch, especially in the face of the door.
Space is enough for five passengers and the luggage compartment has a volume of 543 liters wagon version, the correct value for this class of car.

Toyota Avensis S acquisition price
For now, Toyota’s new Avensis announced prices for the European market. Prices should occur in early September, then all following the model to arrive in showrooms. Competition is quite fierce mid-range segment break patterns and prices for a similar model tested with approximately 115 hp diesel engine up to 25000-27000 euro average. We expect Toyota to join the same trend in terms of price.
In 2009, Toyota Avensis has gone through crash tests organized by Euro NCAP. The result was noted overall score of five stars. Adult occupant protection recorded a rate of 90% and child occupant protection was rated at 86%.
How the new generation Avensis is based on the same technical platform and scores were similar whether this model should be subjected to crash tests. Of course, Toyota offers a full set of airbags as standard plus a number of active safety systems together under the general name of Toyota Safety Sense. This package is offered standard on all trim levels and includes a system that predicts potential collision alert unintentional lane driving, traffic sign recognition and automatic beam.
I experienced two systems of Toyota Safety Sense package and the model we tested. Active system to avoid a collision is felt when the car in front braked late or slows suddenly. First comes a visual and audible warning to the driver points out the need to hold back, then if the driving intervenes, the car will brake automatically.
We managed to capture the offside system, primid a warning when I passed a parked car. Then automatically recognize traffic signs and posting them on the center display is faulty especially regarding signs identifying the speed limits. The system reads them, but sometimes seen ramen fixed on the last sign, even if restricted area ended much. A bug that will likely be solved by Toyota engineers until the commercial launch of the Avensis.
Investing in this second facelift was important and changes to the Avensis are not only optical, but also of structure. Body rigidity was increased and this allowed Toyota engineers use a little more comfortable suspension. This “read” better running surface unevenness and the result is a great feeling for those on board.
There is dynamism of a Ford Mondeo, but that is not necessarily a minus. That’s because most customers do not seek a Avensis car serpentine, but a car comfortable and efficient. Assisting electric steering was retained, but the system has been refined, and the feeling in the steering wheel is now very pleasing. Although at high speeds direction seems a bit too easy cornering proves to be extremely precise and linear.
There are no major problems in this chapter, except pillars which prove to be thick enough to embarrassment visibility on bends. Mirrors are large and can be adjusted with ease. Good rear visibility thanks to wider rear windows, and everything is accompanied by a set of sensors and a reversing camera to be able to park easily in any place.
Toyota Avensis S Technology
In terms of technology, the new Avensis has recovered from land they lost to rivals.
Besides Sense Safety package that we talked about above, Avensis now comes equipped with LED headlamps as an option. Inside, an eight-inch touch screen with modern graphics through which displays information from the audio system, trip computer or navigation system. The latter has been upgraded and now uses a female voice be sought from the Romanian language in a tone almost naturally. Until recently, Toyota navigation systems using voice with a strange accent and tone troublesome.
Menu infotainment system is in Romanian, was upgraded dashboard and steering wheel controls are intuitive. It was preserved classical system for controlling automatic pilot: Toyota typical lever located behind the steering wheel.
Toyota Avensis has always been a rational choice. The new model will be no exception, although Toyota insists that it is the most attractive Avensis created so far. It is true that the new Avensis has won a Chapter picture, with a more aggressive front end to the pre-facelift model. However, the overall figure is similar, and most clients that model companies and fleet customers.
His problem is that Rrvalii Avensis even they did not stay for nothing, and the middle segment cars look better than ever. It is enough to look at the Mazda6 and Ford Mondeo. But the strong Avensis facelift received will be sufficient for the current model to stay longer on the market since several years.
