BMW was the big winner of the edition in 2015 of Engine of the Year Awards. The propulsion system of BMW i8 won overall in the International Engine of the Year Awards 2015, in the displacement class category and new engines launched.
The jury of 65 members of the “International Engine of the Year” named the winners of 2015. The 65 journalists, fewer than in 2014 and in 2013 represented 31 countries (including Romania) and have chosen the best engines available market, following the technical specifications provided analysis and testing of those propellers. After three consecutive victories Ford‘s 1.0 EcoBoost unit’s string of victories and manufactured in Craiova was interrupted by the propulsion system of the BMW i8. Triple victory in overall 1.0 EcoBoost engine, a first in the history of the competition, was followed by the good results in 2015 for Ford diesel engine with second place overall and first place in the category dedicated (the latter for the fourth time in a row). The big winner of the edition 2015 BMW i8 sports was hybrid, whose propulsion system received three first prizes.
Like every year, the contest “Engine of the Year” there were several categories, defined displacement: Under a liter between a 1.0 and 1.4 liter, 1.4 liter and 1.8 liter between between 1.8 liters and 2.0 liters, between 2.0 and 2.5 liter, 2.5 liter and 3.0 liter between between 3.0 and 4.0 liters and 4.0 liters over. Beyond these categories, there is a category Green Engine Award, designed powertrain designed to minimize pollutant emissions category “Best New Engine” and the supreme title, “International Engine of the Year”.

Sub 1.0-liter category
1.0-liter petrol unit from Ford has won for the fourth time in a row, its category prize under one liter, given that its displacement is 999 cc. As in previous years, the jury appreciated the dynamic qualities of the engine and its small size. The new engine entered the ranking is 1.0 Ecotec unit from General Motors, Opel available. In this category there are two engines manufactured in Romania: 1.0 EcoBoost and 0.9 TCe, both petrol turbo.
1.0 – 1.4 liters category
Volkswagen was on the brink of total domination of this category until France’s PSA came with a 1.2 THP. French Propeller managed to get more points than any other unit in this displacement class. Note the presence of Volkswagen in this class.
1.4 – 1.8 liters category
In this category, the BMW Group has occupied for several years in a row, the first position. In 2015, all BMW lead, but the other engines, propulsion system‘s i8. In addition, the 1.5 turbo engine from BMW manages to be present in two separate places, depending on the model and the power developed 1.6 turbo unit with the old split with France’s PSA. New entrants in class EcoBoost engines are 1.5 and 1.75 turbo Fiat Chrysler.
1.8 – 2.0 liters category
Mercedes–Benz has managed to win again this category by 2.0 turbo diesel engine developed by AMG division for compact range. Besides that, the standings remained unchanged, although the engine of the BMW TwinPower Turbo 2.0 was moved to another position group, as happened with other engines. Newcomer this category is twin-charged engine from Volvo.
2.0 – 2.5 liters category
To confirm the supremacy of German engine displacement class average, but extremely potent Audi has in mind another victory last category 2.0 – 2.5 liters. The five-cylinder unit, among the few of its kind currently available on the market, capable of delivering 340 horsepower and 450 Nm. New entrants are the engines of Ford Mustang and Subaru Impreza STI.
2.5 – 3.0 liters category
BMW managed a double win in front of Porsche in this chapter. If the 2014 crown in front of BMW recover from Porsche in this displacement class brand of Munich now has two engines 2.7 liter boxer in front of the Boxster and Cayman‘s equipment. BMW also won here in 2012 using 3-liter biturbo engine. Now, the prize goes to a 3.0-liter, six-cylinder found in the M3 and M4 equipment. Four of the six engines won in this category belong the BMW, a sign that Germans can be proud of their establishments further six-cylinder.
3.0 – 4.0 liters category
Category displacement engines between 3.0 and 4.0 liters was dominated again by McLaren. The following places were occupied by new engines of performance models offered by leading manufacturers of this world. Four of the six engines in this class are created by Volkswagen.
Over 4.0 liters category
Here they battled the most powerful supercars of the moment, and Ferrari won again. They were present and yard performance models of German manufacturers Mercedes and BMW, but third place was the best result for the Germans. Ferrari also won here in 2012 and 2014, and the sound of Maranello Italians are always ready for battle and are favorites in the first place.
Performance Engine of 2015
Ferrari has gone on display again peformance award for its powertrain. This time, the unit was awarded aspirated V8 probably farewell to the 488‘s launch brought dismissed the offer. Note entry into the class of the Fiat Chrysler with a supercharged V8 engine, 707 horsepower beast Charger and Challenger offered on Hellcat
Green Engine of 2015
Engine “Green” of 2015, the same as last year, is not loaded with petrol, no diesel or compressed or liquefied gas but electricity. We are talking about 100% electric drive train Model S. Tesla’s next two places on the podium were occupied by BMW for its new solutions and wide, with a total score of Munich three positions in this class.
Best New Engine of 2015
Hybrid Supercar BMW i8, received first place here. I8 hybrid system’s equipment has received the maximum score in our test, and the International Engine of the Year at the conclusion confirms a significant tiebreaker to second place judging by points awarded. BMW’s solution was better than the units denoted rivals from Mercedes, Ferrari, Volvo, Volkswagen and General Motors.
